Book of the Dead, ancient Egyptian collection of mortuary texts made up of spells or magic formulas, placed in tombs and believed to protect and aid the deceased in the hereafter.
Probably compiled and reedited during the 16th century bce, the collection included Coffin Texts dating from c. bce, Pyramid Texts dating from c. bce, and other writings. The Book of the Dead is not an actual book. It is a collection of mortuary texts.
It consists of formulas, hymns, incantations, magical words and prayers, believed to help and protect the deceased in the afterlife. There are approximately known texts from various periods across In search of the dead book Egypt's history.
The Book of the Dead is the modern term for about two hundred compositions assigned numbers in modern times for reference purposes. In Richard Lepsius assigned numbers in his edition of the papyrus of Iufankh (Egyptian Museum Turin), the longest manuscript known to him from the period at which the sequence of compositions was most.
